Different Types of Solar Inverters
Solar Inverters, also known as PV (Photo Voltaic) converters, has the main function of transforming the electric direct current (DC) voltage from the sun rays into alternating current (AC).
All solar energy harvested by your solar panel pass will pass through the solar inverter, which will consequently help run home-based appliances, machines, or any other utility grids it is connected to. There are a few different types of solar inverters and each of them operates slightly differently.
1. String Inverters
As your solar panels produce energy in DC (direct current), all is sent to a single inverter that will convert the electricity from solar panels into the appliance and machine-friendly AC (alternating current). They received the name 'String Inverter' as you connect strings of solar panels to them - the simplest in design and most effective solutions if you are price driven and are not particular with advanced monitoring features.
They have been around for many years and as such, have a very mature built-in technology. Their overall installation cost is very economical compared to other inverters and is the most common inverter type for residential application. On top of that, it can be mounted on cars or relevant vehicles such as a caravan and on the grounds as well.
Properties with an accommodating roof structure that receive consistent sunlight throughout the day will benefit the most from String Inverters, and for this particular reason, that is why it is the famous choice for many Australians home especially in the sunshine state, Queensland.
2. Hybrid Inverters
New generation Hybrid Inverters allow the combination of solar and battery inverter together in a single unit. You are able to install batteries into your solar power system, meaning that efficiency and productivity of the inverter are greatly improved.
Also called the Multi-Mode Inverters, they are slowly gaining traction against the more conservative solar inverters as batteries are becoming cheaper thus the overall cost is becoming more attractive. However, there are only limited choices in the Australian market at the moment.

3. Battery Inverters
These are solar inverters that utilise battery backups; you can retrofit batteries to your Solar Power System, or keep the battery system separate so the energy produced will go through different inverters.
The major purpose of battery inverters is to use the battery power and provide AC through an onboard charger when power supply is not available due to equipment shutdown. Anti-island protection is required in the utility grids installation, an important safety feature required by law, so that the inverters will not continue generating power in the event of a grid outage.
